Gabbeh Rug

Gabbeh rugs are made by the Qashqai and Luri nomads in the Fars province, around Shiraz. Originally, the rugs were used for sleeping, as their higher pile provided warmth. The uneven, hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool gives Gabbeh rugs their distinctive, grainy surface texture. Many of the rugs feature natural shades of cream, brown, and grey. The red, yellow, green, and blue colors are created using plant-based dyes. Most Gabbehs are simple in design; when motifs are included, they are stylized patterns reflecting the daily life of the nomads. Goats, camels, dogs, plants, and people are common motifs.
