Microsorum Pteropus var. Soft Leaf

Microsorum pteropus ‘Soft Leaf’, commonly known as Java Fern Soft Leaf, is a popular aquarium plant valued for its ease of care and more delicate appearance. This variety is recognized for its thinner, softer leaves compared to standard Java Fern, giving it a slightly lighter, more refined look in planted aquariums.

Recently reclassified as Leptochilus pteropus, this plant is still widely known in the aquarium hobby as Microsorum pteropus. Like other Java Fern varieties, it grows well in low to moderate lighting and adapts easily to a wide range of water parameters, making it a great choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists.

Its moderate size allows it to fit naturally into both nano and larger planted aquariums. It pairs especially well with plants like Anubias and Bucephalandra, where its softer leaf texture adds contrast. As an epiphytic plant, it can be attached to driftwood, rocks, or aquarium decor using thread or glue.

Be sure to keep the rhizome above the substrate to prevent rot. Java Fern Soft Leaf can also be grown in humid environments such as terrariums or paludariums. Propagation is simple—just divide the rhizome and reattach as needed.
